Using different gauges of Nichrome Wire

I keep a number of different gauges of Nichrome wire in my studio.  I've made a handy table of the sizes I use and what they are good for. 

Nichrome Wire Gauges and Uses

16 Gauge	Large fused animal legs (6-10" tall)
18 Gauge	legs for medium sized animals (4-6" tall)
20 Gauge	fused animal necks and tails and wings - Jewelry projects
22 Gauge	small jewelry projects
24 Gauge	animal whiskers

Remember, with wire, the smaller the number, the larger the wire.  So, 16 gauge is quite a bit thicker and heavier than 20 gauge.  Also, not all Nichrome wire is the same.  Nichrome is short for Nickel Chromium and comes in two formulations, a 80% Nickel and a 60% Nickel, typically just shortened to Nichrome 60 or Nichrome 80. 
 

Nichrome Wire Types

Formulations	Top Temperature	Good For
Nichrome 60	1850 F	Most fusing projects, gets slightly softer after fusing
Nichrome 80	2150	Casting projects or other high temperature firings, stays more stiff after fusing

 
Kiln Formed Bead Molds
